How does UCP calculate GPA?
Grades and Course Information:
UC Pathways determines a student’s cumulative grade point average (CGPA) based on grades earned at one or more post-secondary institutions. The following grades and course types are included in the CGPA calculation: A, B, C, D, F, FN*, I, P, NP, WU*, AU. Transfer courses are not included in the CGPA calculation unless they carry a letter grade of A, B or C taken after high school graduation. *Last grade no longer awarded
*Please take note that FN (Fail – No Credit), WU (Withdraw Unofficially) are not included in the UCP GPA.
Calculation Process:
– A 10 point bonus is applied to a B or better grade for a course where the student has successfully repeated the course from either high school or college with a C or better. *To be eligible for this bonus, there must have been at least 5 consecutive midterms studied in both the original attempt and the repeated attempt.
– An 8 point bonus is applied to an A grade for a course where the student has successfully repeated the course from either high school or college with a B or better. *To be eligible for this bonus, there must have been at least 5 consecutive midterms studied in both the original attempt and the repeated attempt.
– A 2 point bonus is applied to a C or better grade for a course where the student has successfully repeated the course from either high school or college with a D. *To be eligible for this bonus, there must have been at least 5 consecutive midterms studied in both the original attempt and the repeated attempt.
– Grades earned at any other post-secondary institutions (i.e., community colleges, etc.) are not included in UCP’s GPA calculation. However, credits earned at these institutions may count towards degree completion under specific circumstances as outlined below: *If transfer grades carry no letter grade such as P/NP or AU then they may carry over into the CGPA equations listed above provided that there was no limit placed on the number of times that a course may be attempted and no limit placed on the time allotted to complete all degree requirements. *If transfer grades carry letter designations such as P, C, D then they will not be included in UCP’s GPA calculation but may count towards degree completion if: The school from which the student is transferring uses a similar grading scale (i.e., 4-point scale versus a 10-point scale) AND The receiving institution accepts these grades as equivalent to its own 0 – 100 numerical percentage grade system; 0 = failure, 1 – 49 = D, 50 – 79 = C , 80 – 100 = A . If this is not an option at your receiving institution please contact your Academic Advisor for further advice.
